May 18 CABC Meeting Minutes and Action Steps

Attendance:  Lynn, Laura, Tracie, Ann, Diane, Mary, Miranda, Stephanie

Friend of the Court Nurse-In–CABC supported the nurse-in, prompted by a mom asked to leave the court when she began to nurse her infant. Emily Wacsyk created a Facebook event and set a date, checked out the facility, made signs, and encouraged moms to come with their babies. Ann Siegle worked with media contacts and provided information about the need for exclusively breastfed infants to be with their mothers. The CABC sent a letter to every Ingham County Commissioner and to the Friend of the Court Administrator.  The FOC responded that their actions were not in violation of the Ingham County resolution or state law. Day of the nurse-in was warm and sunny– at least a dozen moms showed up at the court building.  Press coverage from local TV, Lansing State Journal, Detroit Free Press, with follow-up on Detroit TV, and international coverage. Judge Janelle Lawless apologized to the mom who was asked to leave the court. Ingham County Health Department will provide follow-up employee training. Action– Diane will draft letter to Judge Lawless to express the Coalition’s appreciation for the positive response and commitment to staff training, and the accommodations during the nurse-in. Lynn, Laura, Tracie, and Ann will review a draft.

Breastfeeding Network– Email update from Beth: MiBFN has 2 new contract employees who are helping with managing a project and also some media/website data collection needs. One of the positions is a paid internship. We will be posting for a new Executive Director and there should be information on our website about it soon.

June 18th at 12 – 1 p.m. we are hosting a webinar for all the local coalitions. There will be a presentation by 3 of the coalitions followed by a question/answer sharing from everyone. It will also be a platform for the Network to let everyone know what we have planned to support the local coalitions. We will send out the link to someone from all the coalitions that can be distributed to our group. There is no cost and coalition members can link in from their home. Action–Only one line per coalition. Diane plans to call in– if anyone else would like to, we could meet somewhere to call-in together.  Let Diane know. drevitte@gmail.com

Golf outing “Tee Off for Babes” is scheduled at Fenton Farms for August 7th at 9:00am. Registration is up on the MiBFN website http://www.mibreastfeeding.org/content/tee-babes. The Network is giving back to the local coalition $100 for every team that they register from the coalition and 1/2 of the sponsor money for anyone that the coalition gets as a sponsor. For instance, it cost $100 to sponsor a hole. If you get someone to sponsor that hole we will give the coalition $50 of that money. I’ll give you more information about the sponsor levels later. Discussion: Coalition has 3 who will volunteer to be a team:  Mary, Tracie, and Stephanie. Need one more. Stephanie will coordinate. Golf clubs needed. Diane has offered to donate $75 to either help defray the team cost, or to go toward sponsoring a hole.  The Coalition needs to donate a gift for the prizes. Action–need a player for the CABC team.Need donations for a gift item–Tracie will see if Dusty’s Cellar can donate a wine basket; otherwise, need volunteer to ask Old Town or other businesses to donate or to sponsor a hole. Diane will get donation of $ to Stephanie.

Local coalition support– more info coming. Coalitions will be able to become members of the Michigan BF Network, with $50.00 annual dues.  This will give coalitions access to speakers for events and trainings, webinars, website, exposure, and connections with other coalitions. Hopefully, this may also help our CABC coalition to be able to function as a non-profit and fund-raise, with the Michigan BFN umbrella. Action– Tracie will check on whether Ingham County HD can fund the $50 annual membership fee.

World Breastfeeding Week/Breastfeeding Month:  Lynn will host the Big Latch-On at Mother & Earth Baby Boutique on July 31 and August 1. Mary will check on group outings at a Lugnuts Game in August to celebrate Breastfeeding Week.  Action: Mary to check with Lugnuts.

Breastfeeding friendly businesses–website form is now live!  Visit  https://mibreastfedbaby.com/ to view.Ann added this to the website, so businesses can  sign-up to be listed as breastfeeding friendly. Diane shared material from Midland Breastfeeding Coalition and their forms and materials. Action– Ann will add the businesses that sign up to the website. ?  modify and add Midland materials to the website.

Sparrow Breastfeeding Friendly Reception–Very nice event to celebrate Sparrow Hospital’s achievement of Baby-Friendly status– refreshments, flowers, balloons, speakers, and lots of time for mingling.

Sparrow Breastfeeding Clinic–info to be added to resource guides: Sparrow Out Patient Breastfeeding Clinic is open twice a week on Tuesday and Fridays from noon until 5 p.m. It is located in the Sparrow Professional Building, opposite the main hospital.  A doctor and lactation consultant team help moms and babies that are having problems with breastfeeding.  Appointments are made by referral from mom’s or the baby’s primary healthcare provider. Action– Diane will add to website resource guide.

CABC display & banner— The new banner needs bungees for attaching to smaller tables.  The  Coalition also needs a table-top display, and will need fund-raising to pay for the display. Action–  Ann will check on pricing for a roll-up table-top display–could be $80-90.

EL Art Fair– Ann communicated with the pastor at Martin Luther Chapel; Diane and Ann put together a tote bag with a nursing shawl made by Ann, a booby beanie, and some baby shampoo, along with email sign-up to win, and copies of the CABC Resource Guide. Three moms signed up, and the winner was drawn by Miranda. Action– For next year, Diane will contact McLaren marketing department to ask if their first aid tent (sponsored by McLaren) in children’s area could include changing table and chairs for nursing.

Baby Cafe– Will have a display during the Healthy Mothers/Health Babies Conference June 2-3. Register for conference at https://www.regonline.com/builder/site. Possible Baby Cafe panel at a future WIC Conference, as many WIC staff across the state were not familiar with Baby Cafe.

Ingham County- Continuing to take steps to host Baby Cafe–has funding for a sofa.

La Leche League- no new updates

Physician comments regarding breastmilk sufficiency past 6 months. Discussion re: physicians who have told moms that they need to supplement at 6 months or add solids.

Getting more BF moms involved in Coalition: Ann raised this question…more discussion needed. Many bf moms are not always able to get to an evening meeting. Many are active on facebook and able to volunteer for certain events, which is great.

CABC Fundraising– several topics discussed for fundraising to meet some CABC needs, such as 1) table top display 2)MiBFN membership 3)gift bags, supplies and materials, 4)Car window clings, “I breastfeed anywhere”  5)Baby cafe and other BF support group needs
