Capital Area Breastfeeding Coalition– September 28, 2016 Meeting Notes

September 28, 2016 Meeting Notes– Capital Area Breastfeeding Coalition

Attending: Lynn, Diane, Naimah, Ann, Tammy, Tracie, Stephanie, Claretta, Lindsey, Mary

Announcements: Heather from Barry-Eaton District Health Department won’t be able to attend; she has left her position at the Health Department.  Hopefully, her replacement or the peer counselor at Barry-Eaton will be able to attend.  We’ll keep Heather on the mailing list and welcome her to attend when she is able.

We need a correct email address for Elon Geffrard of Ingham County.

Ingham County Health Department was nominated for a Public Health Award for their media campaign, to be awarded at a statewide public health conference in October.

Halina Vaughan has started a private practice, and may not be able to attend our meetings.  Halina said she might be able to help provide a training for coalition members and breastfeeding advocates who would like to know the best way to sound good and look good for Radio and TV interviews.  Halina, when do you think you could do this training?

Ann attended a women’s leadership conference in Ohio and made contact with a person working to inmprove infant mortality who is interested in the Ingham County survey on safe sleep and breastfeeding. Tracie will sendinformation to Ann to share with Ohio.

Issa Solis has taken another position.

Jonathan Lawrence has filled Issa’s position.

Breastfeeding month:  Additional updates from the July and August meeting minutes include the Black Breastfeeding Sisterhood Potluck and Lift Every Baby event during Black Breastfeeding Awareness Week, and the display of the Get Real About Breastfeeding posters at Sparrow.

It would be great if there were more publicity about the Breastfeeding Walk next year.  The date changed, which caused some confusion, but it would be nice to have more emails, facebook posts, posters with a breastfeeding theme to notify breastfeeding moms and advocates about the walk.

It would be great to have a calendar again next year, like the one developed in 2015 by Willow Tree. Any volunteers to handle this for Breastfeeding Awareness Month  2017?

CABC Website and Resource Guides: Some updates are needed, and Ann will be in touch with Laura to make the changes. Suggestions were made to shorten the on-line resource guide so it can be printed more easily on fewer pages. Other suggestions:  remove LaLecheLeader names, add a section on apps(WebMD baby, Coffective, Baby Nursing, LactMed, BF Guide. Also add “for more resources, visit the website:…… Ann is waiting for new photos for the website and facebook page. Tammy will send info on what Sparrow would like included on the Resource Guide.

Funding: Ann generously donated to the coalition the gift card that the Coalition received from the Michigan Breastfeeding Network (she was given the card to purchase paper products for the April Breastfeeding Mom gathering). Willow Tree also has approximately $50 to use for the Coalition from the 2015 Lugnuts game. Lynn suggests using some $$ to print off the small resource guide in quantity on colored paper.

Mail Chimp– Ann is working on a MailChimp template to improve the appearance of our Coalition emails.

Updates:

Baby Cafe: Going well, lots of attendees, planning the Baby Boo Cafe in October.

Black Breastfeeding Sisterhood: Claretta received a scholarship to attend a postpartum conference. The support group has good numbers and attendance.  The evening group will be changing, so check with Claretta. Naimah may be starting to crochet boobie beanies to assist with requests to “cover up”. Lindsey described how to use the Boobie Beanies to model a breast.

Get Real About Breastfeeding:  Request for more of the postcard size posters with the Coalition website on the back. Tracie presented the campaign at the National WIC Association conference in Denver. Ingham hopes to do more in the campaign with toddlers and extended nursing (kids with shoes on).

Ingham County Health Department:  They are looking to possibly start a support group at Christo Rey with Willow Tree. New peer counselor, Natasha.  Now have two part-time peer counselors.

La Leche League: There were 6 new babies at the last meetings.  Lindsey was on the Current State radio show on WKAR to talk about breastfeeding. Lindsey provided info on the LaLecheLeague Conference on October 7 and 8 in Grand Rapids. Both Lindsey and Laura are presenters. The Virtual Facebook La Leche League meetings are working well.

McLaren: Dr. Schreck will be coming to McLaren on November 1 at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast provided, to discuss “Breastfeeding Initiatives in a Hospital Setting”.  RSVP is needed.  Free to the public to attend. Contact Julie Wilbur at julie.wilbur@mclaren.org or 517 975 6251

Mom 2 Mom Sales: Lynn suggests going through the resource box at our October 26 meeting to see what materials need to be replenished or updated.

Sparrow:  Tammy is now full time; there is new lactation staff who are scheduled at night.

Willow Tree:  The Willow Tree Soiree fundraiser is November 5, $75 per person at the Radisson at 6 p.m.  There are discounts for full tables. There is a dinner, a live auction and silent auction. See the event on Facebook.

Willow Tree Flourishing Families project aims to prevent postpartum depression. There will be volunteer training in early October.
