February 8, 2017 Capital Area Breastfeeding Coalition Meeting Notes

Attendance: Paige and Emily, dietetic interns, GVSU, Lindsey, Diane, Lynn, Krystal and Eden, Ann, Mary, Pat, Natosha, Tracie,

Special Guest: Shannon, Samantha and Zander from Michigan Breastfeeding Network

Shannon will be meeting with all 22 local breastfeeding coalitions in Michigan, and we are the first! There are 3 main projects she would like local coalitions to consider for engagement:

1) Anytime, Anywhere:  the vision of a breastfeeding friendly Michigan, which includes distribution of the window clings, signing the BF pledge, and click and post a selfie with the cling to be entered in a prize drawing.

2) 3-10 Connect:  Steps 3 and 10 of the Baby Friendly Hospital—providing one consistent message for prenatal care, maternity care, and breastfeeding support. If a community wants to do a roll-out of tools, MIBFN will assist in this.

3) Workplace Project:  Workplace awards and education. Helping all Michigan workplaces support breastfeeding employees.

The MIBFN is on facebook, twitter and has a newsletter.  They plan more frequent e-blasts. They are starting a monthly Lunch Learn and Share in April—noontime collaborative meetings to discuss the initiatives:  First Mondays at noon for the 3-10 Connect; First Tuesdays at noon for Anytime, Anywhere, and First Wednesdays at noon for the Workplace Project. All are welcome to join, by phone, computer or tablet—see the www.mibreastfeeding.org website for more information.  The first ones are April 3, 4, and 5.

The next quarterly coalition meeting is March 23 at St. John  River District.

MIBFN would like each local coalition to choose one deliverable in one project.

Shannon brought info for the coalition: window clings, overviews of the initiatives,

Reception/Networking event: Various locations under consideration; seeking donations; name for event:  The Milk Mixer. Invites will be sent electronically.  Date may be changed to March 30 (confirmed after the meeting). Besides networking for breastfeeding helpers, plans are to exhibit the photo voice project and testimonies of breastfeeding barriers experienced by moms from the local area.

Business card/Resource guide and website:  Diane to follow up with Ann re: the business card design so that cards may be ordered and be available for the Milk Mixer and for the Baby Fair. Vistaprint was suggested for printing.
